Loving the sea, this lovely Angel of Unexpected Blessings was a find at a bookstore many years ago. The angel's pink gown, the color of divine love, hemmed in a blue border of white scallop shells made it a keeper. The scallop is a symbol of a spiritual pilgrim on a journey home. A journey each of us is on. The polished pearl in the open oyster shell, a sign the angels are here to help out with the inner-work of transformation.
I reflected on the lesson of the oyster at hand. An oyster has a rough texture, hardly a shell of any rare beauty on the beach. The oyster protects itself by hiding from observation inside its shell. When an
irritant works its way in, the oyster's protective mechanism uses a fluid to coat the "intruder" rather than to succumb to it. Over time, layer upon layer, the oyster's repetitive coating creates a lustrous natural pearl. Interesting that the very thing that irritated the oyster created an opportunity to take the "grit" and transform it into a thing of lasting beauty.
I liked the analogy-- that within our rough, sharp-edged, hard exterior, something amazingly beautiful is happening deep within us. The very thing our senses deem wrathful-- the thing we can't stand a minute longer, whatever it is burrowing in our belly, we are at choice. With the help of our angels and the Holy Spirit, we can apply a coating of divine love and infinite patience on the irritating intruder to our peaceful quiet existence. Round and round, layer upon layer of love and patience, we tirelessly work ...until one day...a polished pearl is our blessing. Unexpected because our irritant was the source of a lasting blessing...an opportunity to love more.
I just learned that the pearl represents the kingdom of heaven.
Enjoy your day with the Angels.
